The reality of war almost immediately dismantles their exuberance. It’s 1917 and wartime in Germany, as Paul Bäumer lies about his age so that he can enlist alongside his friends - all of them very young men filled with romanticized, patriotic notions. The film is directed by Edward Berger ( The Terror), and stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Moritz Klaus, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic, Daniel Bruhl, Devid Strisow and Sebastian Hülk.Īll Quiet On the Western Front is in select theaters now, and hits Netflix next week on October 28th. Set during WWI, the film centers on a group of young, idealistic German soldiers whose romanticized ideas of war are quickly shattered by the brutal reality. But based on the reviews out of the festival and TIFF as well, we could be looking at a frontrunner to win Best International Feature at the Oscars. And I would’ve, but knowing the original source material and the classic 1930 war movie, there was no way I would start my day with something I knew would be a grim experience. Kyoutaro's previous work was set in the period about 100 years before the historical 47 Ronin incident and was similarly a battle manga, so he does seem to have been a very logical choice for an artist to work with given his experience.This past weekend at Middleburg Film Festival I had multiple people telling me I needed to add All Quiet On the Western Front to my busy schedule. Since the description doesn't mention who these heroes are serving, the death of the demon lord's counterpart could be a catalyst for the start of the series. This choice of number is certainly no coincidence, so some parallels to the 47 Ronin or other stories about them should be expected. The story of the 47 Ronin was a true event that took place in 1702, but the tale of honor and loyalty became popular in Japan and served as the basis for numerous works, including a 47 Ronin film from 2013. The 47 Ronin were a group of samurai who lost their master and then spent a year plotting vengeance, only to immediately perform ritual suicide as a group the moment said vengeance was achieved.

Kyoutaro previously created a manga adaptation for the game King of Fighters, known as King of Fighters: A New Beginning in 2018, and most recently worked on the 2021 series Tenkaichi: Nihon Saikyou Bugeisha Ketteisen, a battle tournament manga set in the Sengoku period following the death of historical figure Oda Nobunaga.įans familiar with Japanese history may recognize the number 47 as having a particular significance. Little other information is available on the series at present, other than the fact that Versus's art will be done by Azuma Kyoutaro. Interestingly, this means that each of ONE's manga will have been published by a different one of the biggest manga publishers: One-Punch Man is published digitally by Shueisha ( Shonen Jump), while Mob Psycho 100 was published digitally by Shogakukan.
The new series, Versus, was described in a tweet by manga news translator and aggregator Twitter account as a "fantasy battle manga." The series will follow the war between 47 heroes selected to battle against the 47 great demons in service of a demon lord, and will apparently be debuting in the January issue of Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine, which will actually be released on November 26, 2022.
